“Always strive for your dreams”, Joselin, BGCLAH Senior

How long have you been a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor?

I’ve been coming to the Club since I was in elementary school, and I’m currently a Senior in High School

What’s your typical day look like at the BGCLAH?

After school is over, I’ll come to the Club. I get a snack and then head straight to the College Bound room to get my homework and essays done. I’ve been working on my college applications here too, and that’s been taking up a lot of time. I’ll also go to Arts Academy. I’m in the music program so we get together and practice vocals. There’s tons of things to do here and the staff is always available to help. I’m able to hang out with my friends, and get my work done. At the Club, I’m involved in College Bound, Arts Academy, Khan Academy (Math help), Writer’s Workshop, Keystone, and I go on College Tours.

How would your life be different if you didn’t have the Club?

I think I would be a lot more stressed, especially now that I’m preparing for College. My parents didn’t go to College, and our College Counselors at school have very limited hours. They can only meet with us during 15 minute snack, or lunch, or else you’d be pulled from class and miss information. The staff here are available to meet with you whenever you need. They help you navigate the system and prepare for our future. I didn’t even know I needed to do a personal essay or have the SATs for my application. The Club walks you through the process and helps you stay organized. They also help with finding scholarships and financial aid, which is so great!
