STEM
Science. Technology. Engineering. Math
Our STEM program strives for members to be inspired and prepare for a growing job market in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through our curriculum, coinciding with what our students are learning in the classroom, we offer our members opportunities for hands-on experience. Each of our Clubhouses has a STEM center equipped with a 3D printer, robotics kits, science activity supplies and computer programming software.
THE IMPACT OF STEM
Raytheon, Marathon, Port of L.A., AltaSea and other organizations are integral parts of our STEM Program. Thank you to all who help us educate Boys & Girls Clubs members!
Meet the STEM Members
Briella
Briella discovered her love of science during a STEM lesson at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor, where she was able to use cabbage juice to reveal invisible ink made out of lemon juice. Briella wants to continue to learn more about science and major in Chemistry when she gets older!
Alexis
"When I grow up, I want to build robots. In STEM class ay the Club, I get to see how robots are made. Here at the Club, you get to learn more than you would anywhere else about chemistry, robotics and computer science. We have Snap Circuits and microscopes. If I never joined the Club, I would have never been introduced to these topics"
Katie
Katie participated in the STEM and Blue Economy partnership with AltaSea and Blue Robotics. She was able to build her own ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle and learn about ocean conservation. This sparked Katie's interest in Marine Science!
TESTIMONIALS
"My goal is that Club members are not afraid to experiment, even if it means
failing sometimes. They can apply the lessons they learn in STEM to the rest
of their lives. Thankfully, we are able to give our members these
kinds of opportunities at the Club."
ALEJANDRA LINARES, STEM COORDINATOR
“The future of our community has no greater presence than in our children. That’s why the BGCLAH is so vitally important. AltaSea and the BGCLAH are kicking off a six-week Blue Economy educational program. With this program, and the many to follow, we want every child to inspired to become an ocean innovator, scientist, educator, entrepreneur or conservationist. And for the cycle to continue and on, and on, and on, for generations to come."
